How to be an Instagram Super User
Instagram is easily my favourite social platform – and I’m not alone. Current statistics show that the app has 7.3 million daily users. It went quickly from a way to pretty up your photos to post on Facebook, to a social media superstar in it’s own right. With Instagram’s rise in popularity came the super users. We define a super user as a non-celebrity with over 10,000 followers on their social network.
Here are some tips for you to become an Instagram super-user.
1) Post regularly (but not all the time).
The general rule of thumb is once a day. Most super-users post at least 5-6 times a week.
2) Share high quality images and video.
Never post something just for the sake of posting. It is much better to post nothing than to post something which is below par. Your followers want to engage with you because you are creating content that they want to engage with – this is one ball you definitely don’t want to drop. You can use apps such as Flipagram to create something a little different from time to time.
3) Do not over-use hashtags.
Do use hashtags conversationally or at the end of your post but never use more than 2 in the entire post. Hashtags must always be relevant to the image OR the story you are telling in your accompanying post. NEVER use the hashtag #TagsForLikes… This is not something ever used by super-users.
3) Write an engaging accompanying post.
Hashtags on their own are booooring! Even though Instagram is a very visual platform, and that is the main focus, it is still very important to have a good quality caption to the image.
4) Use the ‘Name This Location’ feature where relevant.
This allows people in that local area to stumble across your image when they are checking out the cafe or park you tagged in your image. It’s also a great way to gain followers within your local area.
5) Edit your photos well (but not too much).
No one wants to look at cartoon perfect over edited pictures of your face, or images that are so over over edited that they just look ridiculous. That said it is okay to indulge in a bit of excessive editing from time to time.
6) Engage with other users.
Many super-users support each other and run in the same circles. Comment on other users posts that interest you. Reply back to comments that you receive on your images and make sure you mention the person who left the original comment by @mentioning them in your reply. Create an engaging conversation and you have a dedicated Instagram follower for life.
